My sister is a genius.  She originated the concept of Birthday Month.  Basically, the idea is that one single day is not enough to appropriately celebrate the specialness of you.  Ergo, birthday month.

Please feel free to adopt this concept for your own.  You’re welcome.

Perhaps there is something somewhat frivolous and/or indulgent that you covet and have been secretly hoping someone would buy for you.  Birthday month is your permission to buy it for yourself.

Or follow the example of one of my clients.  Every year she takes the day of her birthday off.  And she gives herself permission to do only fun things that are just for herself.  Like a massage followed by lunch with girlfriends.

Better yet, take a page from my friend Jacqueline’s book.  For your birthday, check in at a hotel near your house.  By yourself.  Stay for a day or two, and only do things that you want to do.  Only eat things that you want to eat.  Sleep when you want.  Stay in bed for as long as you like.  Spend some time in silence.  Let the world slow down, just for a day.

Most importantly, take stock of where you are in your life and where you’re going.  What went well over the past year, and what didn’t?  How have you grown, and where is there still work to do?  Decide what you’d like to accomplish in the coming year.  Make a plan for how to get there.  Anticipate the roadblocks that might get in the way.

Take a deep breath, celebrate the miracle of your life, and the gift of one more year.

Do you have a birthday ritual that you’d like to share?  Let us know in the comments below.
